Parent Rules
  • Coaches will not discuss playing time, other players, or the scheme with parents
  • If you would like to discuss anything other than these issues, contact Coach Parker to set up an appointment
  • We expect parents to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at games

Successful Football Parent Tips
  • Don’t put your son down
  • Don’t offer excuses for your son if he is not playing – encourage him to work hard and do his best, this is all he can control.
  • Insist on good grades – don’t let football be an excuse for declining academic standards
  • Have faith in the coaches – the coaches are professionals and not recreational coaches.  No coach on our staff has a player on the team and we always do what we think is best for ALL of the players.
  • Encourage your son to play for the love of the game, not a scholarship – A college scholarship is something that a player or parent cannot control.  Worry about the things you can control and enjoy your time in high school.  If a scholarship comes, it will be an added bonus.

Football can help off the field:
  • Grades – We monitor the grades of every player in our program.  We get grade checks every 4-5 weeks and follow up with teachers about tutoring, extra work, etc.  If you ever have an academic problem and need the coaching staff’s assistance, please feel free to contact us.
  • Character – We are constantly reminding your son about good character. We have a Character Education program that will be a year-long approach to teaching what we call “The Elements of Success.” Coach Parker goes over part of this each day with the young men beginning in May and ending at the conclusion of the football season.  The team concept of football and the trials and tribulations it causes are also a great character builder for many young men.

How can you get involved as a parent?
  • Join the Touchdown Club – we meet the 1st Monday of every month and watch film every Monday following a game.
  • Help with the TD Club Fundraisers
    • Corporate Sponsors – get businesses to sponsor the Dragons and build relationships with the community
    • Golf Tournament – volunteer time to help, get sponsors, or help get teams to play in the tournament
    • Kickoff Diner & Auction – bring in items for auction and help with set up/clean up
    • Lift-a-Thon, Player Cards, Write Way – all player-based fundraisers work better with parent support of players
  • Help during Football Season – sign up to be part of one of the following:
    • Field Crew – Help paint the game and practice field – on Wednesday nights during the season
    • Food Crew – help serve meals on Thursdays and Fridays
    • Concessions Workers – we need volunteers to help sell Concessions at all Games
    • Help with the Annual End-of-Year Banquet
  • Constantly promote the program by being positive and making football an enjoyable experience

Parent Frequently Asked Questions:
  • When is a good time to go on vacation in the summer? Summer break is mandated by the GHSA for the week after July 4th this year.  That means your son will not miss any workouts if he goes on vacation this week.  If you go on vacation another week, your son will not be punished, but he will miss those opportunities to get better and they cannot be made up
  • Do you like players to play other sports? YES!! We strongly encourage our athletes to get involved in winter and spring sports.  We always work with them if they have to miss football activities for other sports.  All we ask is that they are always at a football workout if they can be.  Don’t use the other sport as an excuse to be lazy.
  • When is practice mandatory? Beginning Aug. 1st through the end of the football season, practice is mandatory.  Please do not schedule conflicts during this time. We have to hold all of our players to the same standard and have to punish them if they are not at practice.  The only exception will be if they have an excused absence from school on that day.
  • Can we attend practice? Definitely. You are welcome to come watch practice.  Please watch from the hills and please do not interact with the players.  It is also important to remember to be positive in your comments.
  • How do you determine my son’s position? It is not appropriate to question playing time or argue about positions, but it is a good question to ask the rationale behind the choice.  The coaches discuss each player at length throughout the year and attempt to make position assignments that benefit the entire team.  Sometimes it is not what you may like or maybe even what your son likes, but we ask that you have faith that the coaching staff has a plan.  We have many years of experience, and many victories as a group of coaches. We will always strive to do what is best for the team.
  • How do I know if my son is playing JV or Varsity? Everyone who is in 10th -12thgrade is a member of the Varsity team and will be on the sidelines on Friday night.  There is no guarantee they will play, but they will be ready to play.  All juniors and sophomores who do not play the majority of the varsity game will play JV to gain experience..  If your son is a Junior or Sophomore and starts for the Varsity, he will probably not compete in JV games.  If your son is a Senior, he cannot be on the JV   We take pride in having a very successful JV program.
  • What do I need to do if my son says he is hurt? Call Coach Parker.  This is the best reason to call the coach. We are dedicated to keeping our players as safe as we can and will never deliberately put your son in jeopardy.  Sometimes we don’t know they are hurt because they don’t tell us.  If your son is hurt, call Coach Parker first and make sure he knows of the injury – he can contact our trainer and physical therapist to see what steps to take next.  It will save you time and money to go through the school’s physicians.
  • What do I need to do to help my son get a scholarship? This is the most difficult question to answer because it is out of the high school coach’s hands.  We can help get their name out, but cannot get them scholarship offers.  See the College Recruiting section on this site for more info.  If that does not answer your question, contact Coach Parker.  The main thing is to understand that your son is not guaranteed a scholarship and it is a privilege to be considered.  All your son can do is the best he can for our team and don’t worry about things he can’t control.
